Students at John F. Kennedy High school held “The Everything” protest to bring attention to issues like discrimination and to raise awareness.
Seniors Itzel Soledad Martinez and Sahara Niazi Sharma helped lead the event and shared what it was about.
Sahara said the mood of the protest was “to be prideful and show the fact that people do care because, there is a lot of miscommunication and prejudice going around and a lot of negativity, this shows that we care and we are here.”
The idea for the protest started just two weeks ago. “They went up to Principal Mr. Brown and discussed” Sahara explained about how they got it approved. Itzel says that the group decided to either protest in front of the auditorium or go around campus.
The Clarion asked Sahara why they chose to host a protest around campus. “Minorities and people of color are being discriminated against on a daily basis,” Sahara said. “Jimmy Kimmel got shut off just for speaking about it.”
Clarion Staff Reporter Itzel Soledad Martinez, who was a part of the demonstrations, also added to Sahara’s quote “I want to add on the fact that a lot of the people here are uneducated and unaware of what’s going on,” Itzel said. “Maybe [we can] start getting people to see our views on it.”
The protest showed that students wanted their voices heard and hoped to spread awareness around campus.
