JFK High School has been seeing a big boost in breakfast participation thanks to the district food truck.
The food truck has been running since summer 2022 and will return to JFK every other Tuesday until winter break. Last year the truck even set a record at JFK by serving 550 breakfasts in just 45 minutes.
According to David Lose, Nutrition Services Area Supervisor for SCUSD, the truck has been serving at JFK because of the school’s high enrollment. Normally about 250 students eat breakfast in the cafeteria, but when the truck comes that number can jump to over 550.
The big difference between cafeteria food and the food truck is how it’s made. While most schools have similar menus with food that needs to be served quickly and efficiently, the truck is able to cook from scratch with fresh ingredients. This means less processed food and more meals prepared the same morning.
This visit, the menu included pancakes with berry compote butter and a parfait with a berry scone. The goal is to get more students eating breakfast so they can focus better and start the day with energy. As Lose said, “We feel very strongly about serving as many kids as we can and helping them start their days off right and be academically successful.”
The next upcoming dates for the food truck are October 14, October 28, and lastly December 9. The Kennedy cafeteria will also remain open when the food truck is here.
