About a month ago, on January 28th, events and festivals worldwide marked the beginning of the 2025 Lunar New Year. Even locally, familiar places like Arden Mall, Fairytale Town, and the Sacramento History Museum held their own parades and performances. Throughout California, prominent parades in San Francisco’s Chinatown and even Disneyland in LA shook the streets.

The year of the snake is being celebrated as a particularly prosperous year. But why?

Every year around the end of January to mid-February, Lunar New Year celebrates the start of the lunisolar calendar marked by the first new moon of the year. According to Chinese astrology, one zodiac aligns with each year following a 60-year cycle, and this year’s is the snake!! The elements of this year are wood and fire as wood gives rise to fire. These factors are believed to determine the personalities of people born during this year as well as fortune, luck and wellbeing for the rest of us.

What does the snake zodiac mean?

The snake has a pretty complex symbolism in Chinese culture and astrology as compared to here. It is commonly associated with harvest, rebirth, spirituality, and good luck on one hand. Which is pretty promising and suggests a particularly refreshing and prosperous year. But is also said to symbolize terror, evil, and threat on the other hand. One can only imagine how good fortune and new beginnings will correspond with evil and threat…. can’t wait to see how that pans out for us this year!

What are people born in the year of the snake like?

The snake is designated the most tenacious of the 12 zodiac signs and people born in snake years are believed to be mysterious and uncanny individuals. Mirroring the seasonal habits of actual snakes, individuals born in the spring and summer of the year are regarded as powerful and positive while those born in the fall and winter months are more submissive and reserved- just as a snake in hibernation would be. The weather in which a snake individual is born in is also said to be telling of their future personality. Those born on a day with good weather tend to be more optimistic and low-maintenance than those born in bad weather.

Snake individuals of other years are also known for being extraordinarily wise, introspective, and great at communicating- allowing them to thrive in the workplace and social situations. They are also generally regarded as especially caring and adaptable people. Some honorable mentions of famous people born in snake years of the past include John F. Kennedy, SZA, Picasso, Brittany Murphy, Gandhi, and John Cena.
