CSF students collecting non-perishable food until Nov. 22 for annual KCRA 'Kids Can' Food Drive

By Lucy Thao and Evan Villar, Clarion Website Managers

The annual KCRA 3 Kids Can Food drive is currently accepting non perishable food until November 22. Here at John F Kennedy due to a late start here at John F Kennedy stated by Mr.Lam there is an extended deadline just up to Thanksgiving break for the canned food drive in order to get as many donations as possible. To donate there are boxes all around the school the easiest way is to donate to your second period class. All teachers participating in the drive will have a box.

Clarion: What exactly is the Can food drive and its purpose?

James Lam, Kennedy Math teacher and CSF Club Advisor: Canned Food Drive is a traditional food donation drive that happens annually and makes an impact by helping people fight against hunger with non-perishable foods. The canned food received is donated to food banks and pantries. The KCRA 3 Kids Can Food Drive is a way to help feed families in Northern California and has been helping since 1987. Every year schools pair up with a food agency to help with the drive. JFK has teamed up with South Sacramento Interfaith Partnership (SSIP), a non-profit organization that operates SSIP Food closet out of the local church in South Sacramento. The SSIP serves ours and neighboring zip codes year round. California Scholarship Federation (CSF) has also always been the connection between JFK and SSIP to lead the can food drive.

Clarion: How can students help?

Lam: Students are asked to donate through any of their participating classes, but if the particular teacher isn’t participating, they can donate to Mr. Lam’s room T5. Keep in mind that the only donations allowed are food donations and not monetary donations. If anyone wishes to bring up larger donations, arrangements can be made to drive up and directly drop off to Mr. Lam’s room T5, before or after school. CSF tries to entice students by offering a pizza party to the class/teacher with the most donations.

All information can found in Mr.Lam's room T-5 or on the website https://www.kcra.com/article/kids-can-food-drive-2024-northern-california/61939891
